Sea Ice Experiment: Dynamic Nature of the Arctic (SEDNA)
SEDNA was a international collaborative effort to improve understanding of the interaction between sea ice dynamics and Arctic climate. Read more about SEDNA. (see the bottom of this document)
The SEDNA data set is unique in that ice thickness data collection was inter-calibrated and coordinated with monitoring of the ice pack strain-rate (horizontal deformation) and measurements of internal ice stress. This experimental was designed to improve our understanding of the relationship between sea ice thickness and dynamics, investigating stress and strain-rate relationships with a comprehensive suite of spatiotemporal coincident observations.

- Data is provided in 3 formats: Original - usually ascii with separate file format information; NetCDF - Almost all sets are converted to a common data format using NetCDF Convetion developed by co-investigator Andrew Roberts. ASCII - Most sets also contain an ascii format for researchers who do not use NetCDF. The basic format is to dump the NetCDF header with lists the variables, their units and descriptive names. Comments associated with the data set are also part of this long header". Then each column is labeled (not the case with many original submissions) and data is presented in a formatted fashion. When the orginal files are well made spreadsheets or the data is images or large gridded data, an ascii version is not provided.

About SEDNA
The mass balance of sea ice and evolution of the sea ice thickness distribution is a key component of the Arctic system. It is controlled by thermodynamic ice growth and melt, mechanical redistribution through ridging and rafting, and transport. The SEDNA experiment was designed in a regional Lagrangian frame of reference, and tracked the evolution of a region of ice surrounding the APLIS 2007 ice camp, such that we can isolate the role of mechanical redistribution on the ice thickness distribution.
Data Organization
The backbone of the experiment was an array of buoys deployed in 3 rings around the ice camp. The inner buoy array included 6 GPS ice drifters deployed 10km from the camp, with 3 CRREL stress gauges in the ring. The outer buoy array was 6 GPS ice drifters deployed 70km from the camp. In the SEDNA data portal, data is organized according to the scale over which it was collected. Some data was recorded at particular points, and a set of calibration transects were performed over 1km scales. The 10km and 100km scales were defined by the inner and outer buoy arrays. Regional scale is the entire Beaufort Sea, including the 100nm buoy array, and long-range transects. Please note particular data sets fit into multiple scales. For example, before the SEDNA experiment we did not know what scales stress gauges monitor dynamic ice stress over. Also, satellite, reanalysis and model data sets can be analyzed to resolve a range of scales.
